QUINTUN

Copyright (c) 2003 Bill Taylor

Quintun is played on the following board (the board can be larger, up to 10 hexes per side):

The set of edge hexes is called the Ring, the remaining hexes are the Interior.

Black and White have an unlimited supply of their own colour stones, and there are unlimited neutral stones in five different colors (that can be replaced by stacks of five different heights).

TURN - The cell where the King (the marked stone) starts.
TURN - On his turn, the player must do one of the following actions:
drops a friendly stone in a empty Interior cell.
drops a neutral stone of a color not already on the board, in an empty Ring cell; in a side with no stones already in it (including corners) if this is possible.
drops two neutral stones of color(s) already on the board, in two empty Ring cells, provided at most one block of any neutral colour remains (so neutral stones of the same color must always be connected).
GOAL - To win, a player must do at least one of (a) connect four or five different-colored neutrals with a friendly group, (b) connect two disjoint sets of three different-color neutrals twice (with two different friendly groups).

An example

White to move and he decides to resign.

White cannot stop Black from getting red and yellow neutral at the top edge, while also getting purple and a fifth neutral color, not yet played, at the bottom.

This is the match that resulted in the above example:
