The game is played on a 5x5 board, with the following setup:
- SOLDIER - The soldier moves and captures like the Chess pawn.
- KING - The King moves and captures like the Chess Knight.
- LAST RANK - A soldier reaching last rank is promoted to King, if and only if the player has less than two Kings on the board. Otherwise, the player takes that pawn and drops it on any empty cell.
- GOAL - A player loses if he has no more soldiers on the board. A stalemate is a draw.
An example Red can attack the weak b3 soldier. If Black moves Ka1:b3 then Kd4:b3 and attacks d2.
The original rules proposed the use of simultaneous turns.
